Note | The legend was read EBW[Δ]ΗΣ by lmhoof-Blumer (cf. Mi S8.387.61 = BMC, p. xxxii). Y. Meshorer (SM 106 (1977), pp. 33-6), however, rejected the attribution, on general grounds (the city was in the possession of the Nabataeans) and in view of the absence of any finds from the excavations at Ardat/Eboda. He suggested the reading ΓΑΒΗ-ΝW(N) and a re-attribution to Gaba, but, even if we were to accept that the first letter was Γ rather than E, the rest of Meshorer's proposed reading is difficult. lmhoof-Blumer's reading is preferred, though the omega does not seem clear. The coin was minted between 63 and 68 on the basis of the portrait. |
