This is the only coin known for Domitia from Bithynia. It seems to be genuine, but a suspicion remains that it has been altered from a coin of Domitian. There is also a reworked coin in B (B-I, 12.35 = vA Index, Domitia by the Koinon), which was perhaps originally a specimen of this variety. It also has a female head on the obv. with the inscription ΔΟΜΙΤΙΑ ΣΕΒΑΣΤΗ; the reverse reads ΔΗΜΗΤΗ ΣΕΒΑΣΤΗ and the letters Μ Δ appear in the field. MΔ might suggest Bosporus (cf. 469, etc.), but like the rev. legend could have been tooled from {ΠΡ} {ΥΠ} and OMONOIA ΣΕΒΑΣΤΗ. The B coin is not at all reliable and it may seem better to disregard it completely. 1 V GR 15884 Rec pl. CIII.27 10 27 12 1 no no yes [show] [edit]

The rev. of 1 was described as 'Demeter, zu Füssen Schlange, der ihn gegenuberstehenden Homonoia, mit Polos und Füllhorn, die Hand reichend, zwischen ihnen Altar'. The snake is not clear from the illustration, and there is no snake on /2, but Demeter is likely enough, as she appears on other coins of this group (RPC II, 679). The identification of the other figure as Homonoia is derived from the legend, but this is not descriptive as other coins show (e.g. 676ff.); the polos is perhaps a mural crown, and a cornucopia is, of course, appropriate for Tyche. For another issue of Tyche, see RPC II, 683. However, the short chiton is not appropriate for Tyche. 1 vA 6913 22.26 34 1 no no no [show] [edit]

Group A: ΣΕΒΑΣΤΗ ΟΜΟΝΟΙΑ but no monogram Brass (34 mm) Domitian ΑΥΤ(Ο) ΔΟΜΙΤΙΑΝΟΣ ΚΑΙΣΑΡ ΣΕΒΑ(Σ) ΓΕΡ(Μ)(Α) laureate head of Domitian, right ΣΕΒΑΣΤΗ ΟΜΟΝΟΙΑ Eirene (?) standing, left, holding branch and cornucopia The figure is very like that of Pax on the Latin coins with PAX AVGVST (RPC II, 501), and so has been identified here as Eirene. Neither the snake (RPC II, 677) nor the prow (RPC II, 678) is very appropriate for Eirene, though both occur with representations of Demeter; this is perhaps why Bosch (p. 183, no. 4) seems to have identified the figure as Demeter; but Demeter does not seem very likely, and Bosch refers to a similar type under Trajan with the legend Eirene. Both the snake and prow are perhaps in some sense 'issue-marks' rather than attributes of the deity represented as the main type (see RPC II, 680-2). He correctly deduced that the rev. legend was a translation of Germania capta, referred the design to the campaign of 85 (he was not aware of 686) and commented on the incorrect form of the participle (p. 26, note 1), for which the curiousspelling ΠΡΟΤΗ on coins of Nicomedia provides a sort of parallel. Babelon alsocompared the design with that found on a Julio-Claudian relief in Trieste, originally found at Koula, near Philadelphia in Lydia. Most interestingly, he also attributed the coin to Prusias ad Hypium; it was found with a group of Bithynian coins, including others of Prusias, with which it had an 'aspect identique par la fabrique, les caractères épigraphiques, l'épaisseur du flan, la patine verdâtre et rugueuse'. The P coin was described and discussed by E. Babelon, RN 1917-IS, pp. 25-44. Bosch (pp. 187-8), while thinking that the coin was an issue of the Koinon, suggested that the coin was minted in mid-86, when Domitian celebrated the first Capitoline festival. Price interpreted the legend as being in the masculine accusative and consisting of epithets of Zeus, but it would seem odd to omit the deity's name. He was reluctant to treat the legend as being neuter nominative, since he thought a reference to the restoration of the Capitoline temple at Rome at the faraway city of Prusias ad Hypium was unlikely. But there seems no obvious reason why Prusias ad Hypium should not have had its own Kapetolion sebaston, in imitation of that at Rome, a possibility made more probable by the likely representation of the same temple on a coin of Vespasian (RPC II, 669).
