Reign Vespasian
Person (obv.) Vespasian (Augustus)
Obverse inscription ϹΕΒΑϹΤΟϹ
Obverse design laureate head of Vespasian (?), right
Reverse inscription ϹΚΗΨΙ
Reverse design facing bust of Dionysus (with horns), holding flowers (?) in hand
Metal leaded bronze
Average diameter 16 mm
Axis 6, 12
Specimens 15 (8 in the core collections)
Die-links 2–5: same pair of dies. 6–8: same rev. die.
Note These coins are usually attributed to Vespasian, but Titus cannot be ruled out. The portrait on 7 is most like Vespasian, and 7 is from the same rev. dies as 6 and 8. On 6-8 Dionysus bust seems only facing, whereas on 1-5 he seems to have his hands raised; the l. is empty and the r. holding something (a flower?). It is possible that RPC I, 2327, attributed to an Uncertain emperor (Tiberius?) is in fact a Flavian coin.
Correction Corrected coin-type (post publication)
