Note Y. Roman, Hadrien. L’empereur virtuose (Paris, 2008), p. 358 regards this 'étonnante monnaie' as not indicating Hadrian's forethought about his succession and the adoption of Antoninus Pius in February 138 (so Vogt, p. 110), but as ‘l’annonce .. imminente de l'ouverture d'une nouvelle Grande Année’. BMC 3570 has a retrograde rev. design and blundered inscription. Regarded as an ancient forgery by BMC, citing W. Metcalf, RBN 122 (1976), pp. 65ff = CH 7, no. A38.
