New comment (2024), with thanks to P. Villemur. See also NC, 1852, p. 123. Since this series shares the names of the duovirs who struck RPC 627, it must be attributed to Agrigentum as well (see P. Villemur, 'Les émissions augustéennes frappées à Agrigente au nom des proconsuls de Sicile L. Mussidius et Sisenna', BCEN vol. 61, n° 2, mai-août 2024, p. 6-16) . The praenomen L for Statius Flaccus, which is absent on most of the coins, clearly appears on one die (n° 17, 18 and 19) and on some coins of the Mussidius issue -- See also Martini, Sicilia nos. 111-133 (accepting the inclusion of the praenomen L), and now on 627, above. Some specimens appear to have part of one of the duovir’s names in the wreath: Martini 128-30, 129 curiously seeming to read ]STA B[. One has a star behind Augustus’ head (Martini 132)'. See Villemur's article for a full discussion and a die study.

These sestertii are not the product of the mint of Rome as they have a central cavity on obv. and rev. Most of these coins appeared on the market after 1990 and the dismantlement of USSR into 15 socialist Republic. They might have been struck in Thrace, but not in Perinthus, or in Bithynia? Thrace was privileged but Bithynia seems more likely because the coinage of Nicaea and Nicomedia, e.g., is struck on flans with central cavities.

The readings on 2543A-B are uncertain. The readings for the Mu coins in Mionnet IV, pp. 70-71, nos 382-3 ('Cabinet de M. Cousinéry') are ΘƐΟΝ ϹΥΝΚΛΗΤΟΝ ΜΑΓΝΗΤΩΝ [ ]ΠΙ ΜΑΝΔΑΛΟΥ / ΕΠΙ ΦΛΑΒΙΟΥ ΝΟΥΜΗΝΙΟΥ and [ ]ΜΑΓΝΗ[ ]ΘΕΟΔΟΤΟΥ / ΕΠΙ ΦΛΑΒΙΟΥ ΔΙΟΝΥϹΙ. There is a strategos called Aur. Theodotus under Gordian III, but these coins look much earlier, perhaps of the first century. The newly identified Yale specimen largely substantiates the Cop reading. For the goddess, the city goddess of Mostene, see LS 101. –– Corr.: A new specimen (SNG Leypold 1082) has the variant obverse reading NEPON [ ] (rather than the more common NEON), confirming the identificiation of the head as the young Nero, and suggesting that NEON may in fact be a die engraver’s mistake.

Imhoof-Blumer's tentative attribution to Cisthene was doubted by Kubitschek (NZ, 1909, pp. 266–7) and H. von Fritze (Die Antike Münzen Mysiens, p. 233, no. 622). The ethnic is clear on the new specimen 2566/2, and the shape of the omega leaves no doubt that the new attribution is correct.

KM 103, no. 7, FITA 373
|
The reading of the legends on both obv. and rev. is not very certain. Grant, FITA 373 and pl. XI.55, regarded Imhoof-Blumer's description, which is followed here, as 'completely misread and misinterpreted'. He offered 'ΑΛΑΒΑΝΔΕ[WΝ] ΕΠ. Τ. ΟΚΤ. ΚΛΕ. head of Cleopatra to right/ΑΜ(?)Ν(?)ΗΣΣ[ΟΣ ΕΠΑΦ?]ΡΟΔΙΤΟΥ head of Amnessus (?) to right', interpreting it as a coin minted by a T. Octavius, an otherwise unknown governor of Asia in 32–31 BC, depicting Cleopatra, and a private citizen called Amnessos. Grant's interpretation may perhaps be thought fanciful (and TOKTKLE can definitely be rejected as a reading: ΤΟΥΤΗΛΕ seems more certain), though it must be accepted that Imhoof-Blumer's is unsatisfactory. It seems futile, however, to do more than wait for another, clearer specimen to turn up.

The interpretation offered in RPC is that the coin, a smaller denomination for an empress, is signed by a woman (cf. 3149–52 below); her name is Kastoris and she is given the title soteira, just as Epigonos, presumably her husband, is given the title philopatris. On this view, both were in some way benefactors of the city.

The reading of the obv. legend is uncertain. The legend was read as ΓΑΙΟΣ ΣΕΒΑΣΤΟΥ ΥΙΟΣ by Bloesch (ticket with cast in Winterthur), but this seems less likely than the reading given here. ΤΙΒΕΡΙΟΥ ΚΑΙΣΑΡΟΣ ΣΕΒΑΣΤΟΥ as on 4031 would be a possibility.

Jurukova 7, though supposed to read another obv. legend than 4, is probably the same, as the coin of Sofia illustrated on Taf. 2 was struck from the same pair of dies as P 281
