New comment (2024), with thanks to P. Villemur: these coins were formerly attributed to Tyndaris in RPC, following P. Pitotto, ‘Un esemplare di Mussidio Longo per Augusto e la questione della zecca di Tindari’, Annotazioni Numismatiche 22, Giugno 1996, p. 494) and others, but the new coin no 10 in the PV collection has a clear ethnic and shows that they must be given to Agrigentum (P. Villemur, 'Les émissions augustéennes frappées à Agrigente au nom des proconsuls de Sicile L. Mussidius et Sisenna', BCEN 61.2 (2024), p. 6-16). Since other specimens offer a legend running around the wreath on the reverse (3, 8 and 9) including the names of the duovirs L. STA(tius) and P. COTTA which also appear on the coins of Sisenna procos. (RPC I, 668), the latter group must also be attributed to this municipium in spite of Martini's reservations (p. 71 n. 51). R. J. A. Wilson advises us that Cotta is probably a Latinized version of a Greek name (and a Κoτης appears at second century Agrigentum and Malta), while a Κoτας is attested from the same period in Camarina (P.M. Fraser and E. Matthews, A Lexicon of Greek Personal Names vol. III.A (Oxford, 1997), p. 256). And BA on 668 (see below) might be the beginning of a Greek name and there are plenty of candidates (see Lexicon). The original numbering of specimens has been changed: delete 627/5 (Cop 1100), 627/6 = 627/5, 627/7 = 627/6, 627/8 = 627/7 , 627/8 is a new specimen and 627/9 = 627/1. See the article by Villemur for a very full discussion and a die study.
|
Reverse type corrected from ACRAC to ACRAG based on clearly visible specimen (PV Coll., ex Artemide Kunstauktionen e-Live 27, 1–2 Apr. 2023, lot 450), which would be expected for the Latin transliteration of the usual Greek ethnic here (i.e. ΑΚΡΑΓΑΝΤΙΝΩΝ).

665 and 666 are dated to c. 200 BC by Campana, ‘Sicilia: Assoros (ca. 200 a.C.)’, part of Corpus Nummorum Antiquae Italiae (Zecche minori) in Panorama Numismatico 108 (Maggio 1996), pp. 137-40). He rejects the late dating, followed by RPC, but does not explain the use of Latin at so early a date.

A further specimen has been published by T. Gökyildirim (Annotazioni Numismatiche 11, 1993, pp. 223-6) from excavations at Maltepe near Istanbul. He interprets the coin as a piece of Perinthus (reading the monogram as a monogram of Perinthus) and interprets the reverse as Agrippina I (presumably wrongly as she was never augusta). The attribution to Perinthus is possible, as Perinthian coins are very similar to those from Bithynia, but by no means certain: the absence of an ethnic and the use of a monogram are more characteristic of Bithynia.

Previously attributed to Commagene (BMC Galatia, p. xlviii and p. 112), these coins were given by Hill to Cyprus (NC 1917, p. 24) where they occur frequently. A date under Augustus, due to the type of the capricorn, is possible, though by no means certain. Attributed by Nicolaou, op. cit. to Commagene (AD 38-72): see nos. 587-90 and p. 117, where it is said that these coins are found sporadically, not in large quantities, on the island (but there are 24 specimens in Nicosia Museum). If the reverse of this coin is orientated with star above (to match obverse) it has a die-axis of 12, which is the same as other Cypriot coins of Augustus: see I. A. Carradice, ‘The Coinage of Roman Cyprus’, in (ed) V. Tatton-Brown, Cyprus and the East Mediterranean in the Iron Age (London, 1989), pp. 182-87.

Different dies. See also 5448. Grant suggested a mint in Cilicia, but there is no real evidence. The obverse legend is still unclear. The design is quite reminiscent of later coins of Amisus (of Trajan = Rec 77a: e.g. L). -- See now M. Amandry, Une mystérieuse émission provinciale tibérienne frappée en Asie Mineure, in R.Bland and D. Calomino (eds), Studies in Ancient Coinage in Honour of Andrew Burnett (London, 2015), pp. 119-23.

5432-3. These two series raise problems of attribution and date. They have been discussed by Grant, FITA, pp. 222-3; R. Ziegler, 'Eine bisher kaum beachtete Kolonieprägung für Divus Augustus', MÖNG XXI,12(1980), pp. 169-72; and R. Wiegels, MM 1982, pp. 170-6. Grant's assertion that 5432 dates to the Neronian period and celebrates the centenary of Babba's deductio is unlikely: after Tiberius, no more bronze coinage was struck in Africa and the series attributed to Babba belong to Buthrotum (1400-17). Ziegler dates 5432 and 5433 to the reigns of Caligula or Claudius, which is possible, but not certain, and attributes them to a colony in the western or northwestern part of Asia Minor. Unfortunately no provenance has been recorded so far. It should be noticed that these series might have been issued by two different mints, as their style, weight and die axis differ.

|
Oikonomidou Hadrian —, Calomino 54
|
The meaning of ΓΛ is difficult to decipher. Calomino (p.241) argues that it could mean the 33rd celebration of the Aktian games, but he is obliged to suppose that some games were cancelled to fit the 33rd games with Hadrian’s reign: otherwise they would have fallen in AD 102 under Trajan.
