The identifications of the heads are very uncertain; it is hard to believe that the extremely youthful-looking portrait on the obv. could be later than the reign of Augustus, while the rev. head has an Augustan-period hairstyle.

The female head seems very similar to that on 2807 (possibly even the same die??). The remains of the obv. legend suggest that the two heads are Gaius and Lucius, thereby confirming the identification of the head on 2807 as Augustus, assuming that it is correct to associate the two issues. This association is based on the stylistic similarity of the head on the reverse and the same very small module of the coins.

The reading of the legends on both obv. and rev. is not very certain. Grant, FITA 373 and pl. XI.55, regarded Imhoof-Blumer's description, which is followed here, as 'completely misread and misinterpreted'. He offered 'ΑΛΑΒΑΝΔΕ[WΝ] ΕΠ. Τ. ΟΚΤ. ΚΛΕ. head of Cleopatra to right/ΑΜ(?)Ν(?)ΗΣΣ[ΟΣ ΕΠΑΦ?]ΡΟΔΙΤΟΥ head of Amnessus (?) to right', interpreting it as a coin minted by a T. Octavius, an otherwise unknown governor of Asia in 32–31 BC, depicting Cleopatra, and a private citizen called Amnessos. Grant's interpretation may perhaps be thought fanciful (and TOKTKLE can definitely be rejected as a reading: ΤΟΥΤΗΛΕ seems more certain), though it must be accepted that Imhoof-Blumer's is unsatisfactory. It seems futile, however, to do more than wait for another, clearer specimen to turn up.

The portrait could be of Augustus or Tiberius, or a later emperor such as Hadrian; the break in the obv. legend ΣΕΒΑΣ-ΤΟΣ and the truncation recall Tiberian portraits from Lydia and Phrygia, perhaps suggesting that Tiberius is the more likely choice. On the other hand, a much later date is perhaps also suggested by the use of brass; again, this is uncertain.

The identification of the heads is extremely difficult. BMC, following Mi 3.307.21, identified the obv. as Augustus and Livia, and the rev. as Gaius and Lucius Caesar facing their natural father Agrippa; this was followed by Imhoof-Blumer (on his ticket under the coin in B). The portraits are not at all diagnostic; indeed, if anything, they look Severan! On the other hand, the letter form Σ indicates an early date. There is no obvious interpretation to offer; but for the obv. legend one might have suspected that Apollo and/or Artemis were represented, as on the similar piece of Claudius (2819). Compare the similarly puzzling coin of Methymna (2339). See K.-L. Elvers, Plena Caesarum domus. Überlegungen zu einer frühkaiserzeitlichen Bronzemünze aus Alabanda (RPC I, 2816), in H. Schwarzer and H.-H. Nieswandt (ed.), Festschrift für Dieter Salzmann zum 65. Geburtstag, I (Marsberg/ Padberg, 2016), pp. 61-71 and Tafel 6.

2818A-B were given to the reign of Claudius by R. Martini (as noted in the CS, p. 124) on different grounds: 2818A has the same diameter as 2817-8 and its iconography is the same as 2818; 2818B, with the same name, Isotimos, is related to 2818A. On 2818B/2, the name of the magistrate is spelled as Isoteimos and the epsilon is lunate, which is characteristic of the Antonine series (but on the reverse, the epsilon of ΑΛΑΒΑΝΔΕΩΝ is normal). 2818C, a new series, is also given here as its iconography is similar to 2818, 2818A and 2821. But the epsilon of ΑΛΑΒΑΝΔΕΩΝ is lunate. So it is not clear how to date these coins.

The obv. heads were interpreted by Babelon (in Wa) as Claudius and Nero (?); Waddington himself (RN, 1851, p. 232), also thought this, and interpreted the rev. busts as the Senate and Alabanda. An identification of the youthful bust on the obv. as Britannicus seems more likely, however, as other coins were struck for him, but none, as far as we know, for Nero under Claudius.

The bust on the rev. is described in BMC, followed by Macdonald and by von Aulock, as of Dionysus wearing an ivy wreath; but the type of wreath is not clear, and Apollo would seem the obvious choice. Letter form Ⳟ. J. Goddard points out that all three specimens have identical flans and metal breaks. So two at least must be old cast forgeries, perhaps all three if there is another as yet untraced original. On the other hand the brass used for the L specimen is found for other Alabandan issues.
