I 2807 Asia (conventus of Alabanda) Caria Alabanda Augustus? Æ (15 mm) Augustus laureate head of Augustus (?), right ΑΛΑΒΑΝΔΕΩΝ female head, right (of Livia?) The identifications of the heads are very uncertain; it is hard to believe that the extremely youthful-looking portrait on the obv. could be later than the reign of Augustus, while the rev. head has an Augustan-period hairstyle. 1 B 730/1899 3.38 15 12 1 no no yes [show] [edit]
I 2807A Asia (conventus of Alabanda) Caria Alabanda Augustus? Æ (15 mm) Gaius ; Lucius [ ]ΙΟΣ ΚΑΙ[ ] bare and jugate head of Gaius and Lucius (?), right ΑΛΑΒΑΝΔΕΩΝ female head, right (of Livia?) The female head seems very similar to that on 2807 (possibly even the same die??). The remains of the obv. legend suggest that the two heads are Gaius and Lucius, thereby confirming the identification of the head on 2807 as Augustus, assuming that it is correct to associate the two issues. This association is based on the stylistic similarity of the head on the reverse and the same very small module of the coins. 1 Winterthur G 6947 ex Schulten 18-20 Oct. 1989, lot 422 3.37 15.6 12 1 no no yes [show] [edit]

BMC, following Mi 3.307.21, identified the obv. as Augustus and Livia, and the rev. as Gaius and Lucius Caesar facing their natural father Agrippa; this was followed by Imhoof-Blumer (on his ticket under the coin in B). The portraits are not at all diagnostic; indeed, if anything, they look Severan! On the other hand, the letter form Σ indicates an early date. There is no obvious interpretation to offer; but for the obv. legend one might have suspected that Apollo and/or Artemis were represented, as on the similar piece of Claudius (2819).
