I 3367B Lycia-Pamphylia Pamphylia Magydus Æ (21 mm) Tiberius ΤΙΒΕΡ[ ] ΣΕΒΑΣΤΟΣ laureate head of Tiberius, right ΜΑΓΥ-ΔΕΩΝ, Δ Athena standing left, holding Nike on her extended right hand, left resting on spear Δ represents the earliest in the sequence of numbers on Magydan coins, running up to 41 under Gallienus. 1 F. I 3367C Lycia-Pamphylia Pamphylia Magydus Æ (18 mm) Tiberius ΤΙΒΕΡΙΟϹ ΚΑΙϹΑΡ laureate head of Tiberius, right ΜΑΓΥΔ[ΕωΝ] Η jugate and helmeted busts, right Formerly 1737A (specimen /1). The comment made then was : "the tentative attribution to Imbros (F. Kovacs) depends on the countermark which seems like those used there; the style of engraving is similarly crude. Kovacs thinks the heads are one male and one female, but, if they are, rather, both male, then an identification as the Dioscuri is possible (pilei occur on RPC 1736). Kovacs identifies the emperor as Caligula since he reads the first word as [ΓΑΙ]ΟΣ; however it is very unclear." The type was then moved to a new 5494, with the comment: "new specimen /2 indicates that the emperor is Tiberius, since its inscription begins ΤΙΒΕ. The reverse inscription of /2 seems to begin with ΜΑ[ ] and there is a Η above the heads. This makes an attribution to Imbros seem unlikely, and so the coin has been moved to the Uncertain coins. No doubt a clearer specimen will turn up in due course. The obv. inscription given here should be regarded as provisional until then." A note from Ahmet Tolga Tek: the countermark was used in Pamphylia on coins of Phaselis, Perge and Side. The coin seems to read Magydos year H. But Attalea also uses similar types.
