Note Some Ⲱ forms. Vogt 1924, p. 132 and Strack 1937, III, p. 64 associated this type with a military success in Africa on the basis of medallions of AD 159–160 which depicted the emperor beside Victoria erecting a trophy and a reclining figure of Africa (Strack III, nos. 660–1 = Gnecchi II, nos. 23-5 (pls. 45, 7; 47, 1–2) = Mittag 2019, p. 54; nos. 171–2). Mattingly and Toynbee located the victory in Mauretania on the basis of the victories over the Mauri noted by HA Pius 5,4 and Pausanias 8, 43, 3 (BMCRE IV, p. xcvii; Toynbee 1944, p. 136).
