The type looks to be modelled on imperial coins in gold, silver, and bronze of AD 175/6 showing Commodus Caesar with a branch and sceptre and the inscription PRINC(IPI) IVVENT(VTIS), but without the trophy on the imperial type. The inscription here may be an attempt to render Principi Iuventutis into Greek, see Geissen, ZPE 17 (1975), pp. 141-4; Vogt 1924, pp. 134-5; Kaiser-Raiss 1980, p. 15.
