Note |
The reverse figure appears to be copied from Venus Genetrix (VENERI GENETRICI) on the imperial coinage in the name of Faustina II celebrating the birth of her first child in AD 147: Beckmann 2021, pp. 26-7. On the imperial coinage Venus first holds an apple and a swaddled child; on slightly later issues she holds a staff or rudder in place of the swaddled child (Beckmann 2021, pp. 30-1; 33 the apple and staff type occurred earlier on bronze than on gold). It is also possible that the figure was copied from a variety of the LAETITIAE PVBLICAE type in which Laetitia holds a garland and transverse staff (Beckmann 2021, pp. 185 LP1-2; 186 LP4-5; 7-8).
