The heads are often identified as Agrippina and Claudius (BMC; Mionnet; Seyrig on the tickets under his coins), but a simple radiate head, presumably of Helios, had occurred under Antony (4458). Imhoof-Blumer noted a similarity with heads of Trajan, but still preferred to date the coin to the period of Claudius or Nero (GRMK, p. 236), perhaps because he thought that the coin came from Apamea, whose coinage ended under Claudius. The origin of the identification as Claudius and Agrippina seems to go back to the misreading of ΤWΝ as ΘΠ (de Saulcy, p. 22, nos 5–6); the date 89 would, on an era of 37, be AD 52. 27 Leeds-UL 1233 2.28 15.9 12 1 no no no https://explore.library.leeds.ac.uk/special-collections-explore/657794 [show] [edit]

Many more specimens in trade and JSW. One would expect the portrait to be that of Lysanias, but the {Πτο} monogram behind the head (here and on 4770) suggests that it may in fact be a posthumous portrait of Ptolemy. I 4774 Syria Syria Chalcis ad Belum Year 282 31/30 BC Æ (20 mm) Augustus ΝΕ L ΒΠΣ bare head of Octavian, right ΖΗΝΟΔΩΡΟΥ ΤΕΤΡΑΡΧΕΙ ΚΑΙ ΑΡΧΗΡΕΩΣ bare head of Zenodorus, left AMC 866 The date is sometimes retrograde; the Β is sometimes broken and can look like a Δ. The correct reverse legend is ΖΗΝΟΔΟΡΟΥ ΤΕΤΡΑΡΧEI ΚΑΙ ΑΡΧΗΡΕΩΣ, not ΤΕΤΡΑΡΧΟΥ. Either a minting error, or a wrong form of genitive case. Thanks to P. I 4795 Syria Syria Damascus Year 325 AD 13/14 Æ (19 mm) bare head, right ΔΑΜΑϹΚΗΝΩΝ L ΕΚΤ head of Tyche, right; all in wreath de Saulcy 20–1 = Aug 4, BMC 3 Presumably the head is supposed to be an imperial portrait; if so, Tiberius seems more likely, in view of its youthful look and similarity to the portraits on other Tiberian coins (4797–8). The portrait is not like that on 4793–4. 8 Leeds-UL 1216 4.96 22 12 1 no no no https://explore.library.leeds.ac.uk/special-collections-explore/657777 [show] [edit]

I 4954 Judaea Judaea Jerusalem Year 36 AD 6 Æ Augustus ΚΑΙϹΑΡΟϹ ear of barley L ΛϚ palm tree Meshorer 1 Date should be AD 6, not 6 BC. N. Kokkinos, ‘The prefects of Judaea 6-48 CE and coins from the Misty period 6-36 CE’, in D. M. Jacobson and N. Kokkinos (eds), Judaea and Rome in Coins (London, 2012), pp. 85-122, at 90-93, has discussed several candidates of coins of Augustus that might be dated to the year ΛΓ (33). If correctly read, the coins open up the question of the era used on the procuratorial coins. 6 Leeds-UL 4 0.91 15.4 12 1 no no no https://explore.library.leeds.ac.uk/special-collections-explore/656582 [show] [edit]
