Under Antoninus Pius (147–161)

Obverse of coin type (temp. №) 13740, depicting a draped bust of Faustina II.

Annia Galeria Faustina the younger (Faustina II), the daughter of Antoninus Pius and Faustina I, was married to Marcus Aurelius in 145. In late 147 she received the title Augusta after the birth of her first child. At Alexandria her coinage probably begins in 147/8 (an issue in 146/7 is very doubtful).

Under Marcus Aurelius (161–175/6)

Faustina II died late in 175 or early 176 at Halala (renamed Faustinopolis) in Cappadocia, and was afterwards deified. At Alexandria her coinage ends in 169/70, apart from one late issue in 174/5, which presumably reflected her visit to the east with Marcus and Commodus following the end of the short-lived ‘rebellion’ by Avidius Cassius. There are comparable late issues in Asia.
