Note 9. Metcalf’s reading of the obverse legend was wrong, the legend being different from the usual Caesarean one. One specimen occurred in the Caesarea hoard (= Metcalf 201 and Pl. 11) and this type was given by Metcalf to Caesarea with ‘the greatest reluctance’, arguing that ‘there [was] no other mint to which it obviously belonged and the provenance on our hoard lent some small plausibility to the attribution to Caesarea’ (Metcalf Conspectus 105/58). But K. Butcher, in his review of Metcalf’s publication (SNR 76, 1997, p. 298), pointed out different reasons why the origin of this didrachm is Syrian.
